This is sturdy little Pinot that delivers well over its price. It’s clearly varietal and regional, has a lot of fruit-bright, but it has power and scaffold as well. Proper quality right here. Earth, twig, sweet spice and gunsmoke flavours flow into black cherry, undergrowth and cedar. Impressive persistence within the context of it being both dry and tannic. Everything here suggests that it will mature beautifully.
Blood Moon was started by Matt Aulich and a couple of mates back in 2014, but five years later, Matt went solo. His philosophy on winemaking is quite interesting – he produces it because of the wide array of flavours and aromas it offers, but also because of the textures that come out of different techniques. As he says – “this is a primal sensory experience, but infinitely nuanced”.
