Very tart and tangy, ginger-lemon tea vibes are crazy, chamomile too. Aromatics fly out of the glass here. Wild, zingy bubbles going everywhere. Sour-tart-sweet goes off with powdery, chalky tannins in the mix. It’s a cracking drink, quite a bit going on, lots of excitement to guzzle down.

Quite wild when just opened, with a hazy golden color in the glass. Aromas of peach, nectarine & mango jump straight out of the glass. The palate is glossy, with a tangy acid and just the right amount of bubbles you can ask for in a pet nat. If you have a day off and just want to chill at the pool or beach, this is your animal. Super good juice.

Lively, refreshing style with tartness and green herbal character on high. Zesty, passionfruit meets grassy characters, a bit of pickle juice lending some zing and a general sense of drinkability and freshness. Not moving the dial for complexity from the style much, but delivering a really pleasing, easy to get stuck into hit of pet nat. For everyone that wants to get a bit freaky!

Domaine Simha ‘Paysan’ Pet Nat 2020 (500ml)

$59.00

A very fun, characterful and positively challenging pet-nat with tremendous character and playfulness. Most likely this kind of wine isn't everyone's cup of tea, but is truly a raw expression of nature. Not funky or "natty" in any way, but rather very clean, precise and finely crafted. It is definitely ready to drink now, but it will be interesting to see how this will develop over the next couple of years.

A sparkling wine from New England made using Champagne method (Pinot Noir + Chardonnay with secondary fermentation occurring in bottle). Not many affordable sparklers like this are found on the AUS market. Marked with a beautifully rounded structure, elegant bubbles and a fresh breath of acidity. With the richness that it offers, it definitely needs to be paired with some lighter tapas or seafood.

Nikau ‘Tolone’ Riesling 2019

Light golden in the glass. Ripe, almost sweet aromatics of peach, nectarine, ripe pear and honey. The acidity here is through the roof, making your jaw clench with every sip. Layers of fruit, minerality and salinity. Something that really stands out in the selection for this year. Easily approachable now, but has great potential ahead as well. Kudos!

A Riesling coming from the beautiful 2021 vintage. This is just great. Pristine in all respects but with lots going on. Lime and green apple with complex/exotic herb and flower characters, emphasis on the latter. It’s a mesmerising wine in many respects, particularly once it’s had a chance to breathe, thanks to its exotic nature and to the array of scents and flavours. Wow!

A most proper varietal expression on this Riesling. Aromas of petrol, peach, apricot, lemonade and meadow flowers. Clean, crisp and refreshing on entry. Finishes off with a long, tangerine finish. The alcohol and acidity levels are medium, which is not the best contribution for long-term cellaring, but nevertheless, this is still a ridiculously quaffable wine we'd like to bathe in. Straight fire from Clare Valley.

$79.00

Medium lemon green in the glass, just like classic Pinot Gris should look like. Superb aromatics that launch you right into Alsace - green apple, pear drop, loads of stone fruit and some almondy background. Beautiful texture, just so silky smooth. Balanced between the bright acid (which is not high, but very much present) and the medium levels of alcohol. Slightly bitter finish. Gorgeous representation of the grape variety in the totally opposite side of the world. Well done Mr. Arvidson.

A solid QPR for this Geelong white blend. Don't expect out-worldly terroir depth, but rather superb varietal expression and structural balance. Marked with peach-yoghurt and lemon-rind aromas, leading to a smooth, creamy and textural palate that has plenty of body and an aromatic, polished finish.

Domaine Simha ‘Raya’ Sauvignon Blanc 2019

$89.00

A very eccentric, atypical and slightly oxidative, yet very drinkable, complex and enjoyable Sauvignon Blanc coming from Simha. There is very little typical varietal character here and the style is more in the 'natty' white wine camp, with somewhat dominant phenolic notes, some terracotta tones of amphorae and oxidative complexity. However, if you don't mind that, this is a lovely little drop - the relatively light body of the wine and incisive acidity make it a great food wine.

Has an acidity that can cause bruxism after one glass. Luckily, it's backed up by some solid fruit concentration and hefty 13.5% abv. Patrick Sullivan ‘Amazon’ Pinot Noir 2015

$79.00

Decant for a few hours, drink slightly chilled. Lovely nose of violets, rhubarb, crushed strawberries, blackcurrant and some oriental spice. The palate is rich, but not overextracted, making the acidity shine like a diamond. Just a brush of tannins to tighten things up. Lasts long into the night and makes one sad that they only bought a single bottle.

South by Southwest Nebbiolo 2020

$69.00

This is a rare expression of Margaret River Nebbiolo due to the relative scarcity of the variety within the region and our aim was to showcase the high-toned brightness and vibrancy of fruit whilst still integrating complexity and interest through structure and developed tannins to create an earlier, approachable Nebbiolo thoughtfully balanced with sweetness, savouriness and ultimately freshness.

Express Winemakers Drinking Wine 2021

Rich scents of ripe plum, cherry, raspberry and earthy spices. Ultra supple, cuddly texture, sweet-ripe plummy fruit, really slick and easy to drink. Has a nice lift with a good little lick of tannin to close. Really enjoyable, juicy red.

South by Southwest Super Margs 2020

$69.00

The 2020 ‘Super Margs’ draws influence from the highly sought after and respected Super Tuscan wines of Italy, which are made from non-indigenous varieties. The ripe fruit of the Cabernet Sauvignon provides richness and flavour, while the Sangiovese provides youthfulness, aromatics and overall acid to the blend. This wine is a little heavier than a medium bodied wine and shows off some great fruit and well-integrated tannins.

Tomfoolery ‘Monkey Business’ Cabernet Franc 2019

$59.00

Deep ruby in the glass. Blasting aromas of oriental spice mixed with red and dark berry fruit. We rarely find an aromatic profile like this, so hats off for the uniqueness. The body is medium, has a good balance of all its elements and is complemented by some really soft tannins. Juicy, ripe dark berries and fruitcake with a tangy acid spike. Finishes long with ethereal varietal flavour.

Amato Vino Rosso 2020

$49.00

Always good, the Primitivo here shining full on. Lots of fruit-forward character accompanied by a bit of spice in the background. The palate is showing high acid with a brush of ripe tannins. Approachable now, but will go strong for 2-3 more years if you decide to lay it down in your cellar. You have to love how Amato makes these young wines drinkable straight off the bat, something that’s hard to find with old school winemakers nowadays.

Bellwether ‘Ant Series’ Tempranillo 2020

$59.00

As a whole this is an enjoyable, heavy-set all-rounder with decent balance and supple, straightforward fruit. Concentrated, quite opaque black-red color with a thinner, slightly purple rim. Plummy dark fruit and a surprisingly sophisticated streak game meat. The tannins are quite soft and mellow, giving the wine quite chewy texture and round, easily approachable character. The finish is supple and long with ripe and sweet flavors of cherry, dark fruit and quite pronounced vanilla.

Brash Higgins ‘CINS’ Cinsault 2020

$69.00

Medium ruby in the glass, showing wonderful purple hues. The nose on this is just drop-dead gorgeous. OH! Reminds us of one of those French vin de soif wines from Beaujolais or the Rhone. Crunchy berry fruit, some sage, cracked pepper and roasted nuts. Pleasant balance in the mouth with a very persistent concentration of fruit in the front line and some green tones on the finish. Simple, but showing superb drinkability.

Tomfoolery ‘Black & Blue’ Shiraz 2019

$69.00

Deep violet in the glass. Highly pronounced aromas of ripe, almost jammy black & red fruit, sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. Bit of carbonic notes of ripe banana and bubble gum. Full-bodied with sweet ripe tannins that are not overly pronounced and are very well-balanced with the concentration of flavors. The alcohol is high with an acidity that seems to naturally complement the wine.

Rockford Tawny NV

$109.00

Sweet nose, even jammy if you'd like. Lots of apricot and peach complemented by chocolate and almond cake. Yummy. Beautiful, silky texture. Still pretty fresh. Alcohol is big, but not enough to stop the finish from lasting for hours afterwards. A very fine Tawny style of wine made in the heart of South Australia.

Cullen Diana Madeline 2008

$329.00

Deep ruby red in the glass with slight garnet hues. Aromatics are so subtle, yet there is so much depth here - primary notes of black cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry followed by secondary tones of cedar, vanilla, tobacco and just a splash of bottle aging in the form of dried herbs. Powerful structure here, but doesn't jump out or try to knock you out. No, this is Godfather elegance all the way. Tannins are ripe, but only just. Acidity is creating a perfect backbone for all the concentration to be carried to the long finish line.

Two Hands ‘Ares’ Shiraz 2005

$259.00

Very dark purple ruby, with a vivid pink rim. The aromas seem to leap from the glass, offering up a fragrant spray of sweet berry fruit - noticeably grapey in character, but there is also some ripe blueberry, too. Quite elegant and smooth on the palate, and showing no signs of the alcohol level. Fine structure, with very good acidity, and a massive dose of deep berry fruit. No need to decant, just drink it straight from the bottle.

Lethbridge Hugo George 2006

A simply stunning Chardonnay influenced by white Burgundy. Textbook example of how good Geelong Chardonnay ages. There are no signs of decline whatsoever, but instead the wine has reached its apogee of stunning richness, complexity and opulence. It feels relatively big and quite round, yet it doesn't come across as heavy nor flabby because of its balanced acidity and bright, almost trebly minerality, balancing the weight and richness wonderfully. So very lovely. Tremendous value at this price.
