Lively palate, persistent, well-rigged with fine yet chewy tannin, tobacco traces, more red than black fruit. An elegant Wendouree palate, more of the same flavours, with leather and liquorice, acid yes but balanced. Beautiful. This is more about Cabernet than the Clare Valley or Wendouree (although the latter capitialises on the possibilities with the variety in the region).
If we were to make a shortlist of the most sought out Australian producers in our cellars, cult legend Wendouree would undoubtedly take the crown. This celebrated range of wines come from the estate’s original 1893 plantings located on an easterly ridge of the Clare Valley. Unusual for modern Australian reds, these drops are not overripe or sappy. They’re for the long haul and sacrifice some early drinkability and seductive deliciousness for incredible future development – a wise investment.
