Frederick Stevenson Barbera 2021

Medium garnet in the glass, showing wonderful purple hues. The nose on this is just drop-dead gorgeous. OH! Reminds one of those French vin de soif wines from Beaujolais or the Rhone. Crunchy berry fruit, some sage, cracked pepper and roasted nuts. Pleasant balance in the mouth with a very persistent concentration of fruit in the front line and some green tones on the finish. Simple, but showing superb drinkability.

Blackberries and dark cherries dominate the nose and palate, with a bit of mint and fresh acidity coming through which seems to reflect the milder growing season. Whilst full up front with the darker fruit spectrum, the palate tails off into some fine grit tannins and slight dried herbal (sage/thyme) before training out to cherry stone like fresh acid and slight orange peel/amaro breathiness.

Steve Crawford aka the pirate winemaker brings incredible energy and character to South Australia’s wine scene. Steve’s initial goal was to become a chef, but while working in a garden store he realised he wanted to do something that involved travelling and being outside. His grand dream came true and today, he represents the firm backbone of the Barossa avant-garde movement.
